Clean and care for work sneakers - Guide & tips

Werksneakers reinigen en onderhouden - Handleiding & tips

Your work sneakers are part of your personal protective equipment. If you clean them regularly and care for them properly, slip resistance, cushioning, breathability and, where applicable, ESD properties remain reliable. A selection of especially airy models can be found in our breathable work sneakers with steel toe. This helps you work more comfortably and safely while significantly extending the lifespan of your safety sneakers.

Why regular care pays off

Clean work sneakers protect you better. Caked-on dirt smooths the tread pattern and reduces slip resistance; fine dust and mud clog pores and membranes, noticeably diminishing breathability and water repellency. Residues of oils, chemicals or salt attack upper materials and can cause seams, bonds and coatings to age prematurely.

Hygiene and comfort also benefit. Moisture and sweat are breeding grounds for bacteria that cause odour and skin irritation. Dry, well-ventilated sneakers prevent this, keep the interior climate more pleasant and reduce blistering because the lining stays smoother and softer for longer. For warm days, our breathable safety shoes for summer are a sensible addition.

It also pays off economically, because you need replacements less often. If you spot wear early, you can replace laces, insoles or heel lining in time before costly damage occurs. In many sectors, proper care is also part of due diligence when handling PPE. In short: regularly cleaning and caring for your work shoes saves money, preserves safety functions and increases day-to-day comfort. Clean work sneakers properly – step by step

First remove the insoles and loosen the laces so you can reach the tongue, eyelets and lining. Brush off dry, coarse dirt from the upper and outsole. Carefully pry out small stones from the tread with a flat tool so slip resistance works again. A detailed step-by-step guide is available here: Care & cleaning of steel-toe sneakers.

For wet cleaning, use lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral soap. Moisten a soft brush or microfibre cloth and work from top to bottom. Seams, edges and the sole rim collect the most dirt – careful follow-up here is worthwhile. Avoid chlorine, solvents, harsh cleaners or stiff brushes to protect coatings, bonds and membranes.

Inside, a slightly damp cloth is usually enough. For heavier use, you can apply a suitable shoe hygiene spray approved for textiles and linings. Do not soak the sneakers – less water is more. Wipe away soap residue with a lightly dampened cloth and blot moisture with a clean towel.

After cleaning, dry thoroughly at room temperature. Only when the shoes are completely dry should you apply care products or a water repellent. Leather then gets its care; textile uppers benefit from renewing the impregnation.

Drying the right way

Never dry work sneakers on a heater, in direct sunlight or with high heat. Place them in a well-ventilated spot at room temperature, stuff them loosely with absorbent paper and replace it once it gets damp. Insoles dry separately and faster. Shoe trees help maintain shape and fit. If you alternate between two pairs of safety shoes, each pair stays drier, fresher and ready to use for longer.

Material-specific care

Leather

Clean smooth leather gently and, after drying, apply a suitable leather care product such as cream or wax. This keeps the material supple, prevents cracking and improves dirt and water repellency. Always test products on an inconspicuous area to rule out colour changes.

Textile and mesh

Use a soft brush and little water. Do not force moisture into the fabric; lift it off the surface. After drying, a textile water repellent restores beading and protects against rapid re-soiling.

Synthetics and rubber

Clean TPU and rubber parts with pH-neutral soap. Avoid oil- or solvent-based cleaners to prevent embrittlement. Wipe off residues thoroughly to preserve sole grip and elasticity.

Membrane materials

For shoes with a membrane, use only mild cleaners and wipe thoroughly so pores remain clear. Impregnation supports the water-repellent outer without blocking breathability.

Impregnation – keep water out

Impregnation stabilises the beading effect of leather and textiles. Apply spray after cleaning to completely dry shoes, hold about 20 to 30 cm away and work in 2 to 3 thin coats. Ensure good ventilation and suitability for the material. With frequent wet exposure, repeat as needed; otherwise less often – for example monthly, or when water no longer beads.

ESD and antistatic work sneakers

With ESD sneakers, cleanliness is essential because dirt can affect discharge resistance. Use only manufacturer-approved insoles and replace them with original parts to preserve protection. Avoid insulating add-on soles or thick, non-approved inserts. Care products should not indiscriminately seal non-conductive surfaces. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and test ESD shoes regularly if your company requires measurements.

Remove and prevent odours

Odour mainly arises from moisture and bacteria. Detailed tips against sweaty feet in work sneakers also help reduce moisture. Air out your work shoes after each use, dry insoles separately and change socks daily. Performance or merino socks help wick moisture faster. If needed, an appropriate shoe deodoriser or hygiene spray neutralises odour. Washing machine or tumble dryer are off-limits, as bonds, protective coatings and shape can suffer.

Everyday storage

Store work sneakers dry and airy, ideally in a box or fabric bag instead of airtight plastic bags. Heat and high humidity shorten lifespan – cool, dry and dark is optimal. Shoe trees or loosely inserted paper help maintain shape if the pair will be unworn for a while.

FAQ

How can you clean work shoes?

Remove insoles and laces, brush off coarse dirt dry and then clean with lukewarm water and pH-neutral soap. Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth, wipe away soap residue and let the shoes air-dry. Then care for or impregnate depending on the material.

How do you care for sneakers properly?

Clean regularly, dry gently, use material-appropriate care and refresh impregnation as needed. Replace insoles in time, air out after wearing and store dry. This preserves comfort, appearance and safety functions for longer.

How do you clean sneakers without damaging them?

Use mild, pH-neutral cleaners, little water and soft brushes. Avoid washing machine, dryer, high heat, chlorine and solvents. Test new care products on an inconspicuous spot and follow brand-specific care instructions.
